In the beginning of 1846, the Empress Alexandra Fedorovna, spouse of Nikolay I, was improving her health in Palermo. Her elder daughter Olga accompanied her. Being on a visit at one of the solemn receptions, Olga met the Crown Prince Karl of Wirtemberg, and she fell in love with him madly. The girl was in anguish at her feelings, and the only thing in which she found relief was chocolate, which she ate every minute. But her agony appeared to be needless. It happened that the Prince fell in love with her too, and soon he offered her his hand. They say that on the wedding ceremony the guests were offered an appetizing cake made of dark chocolate.

Alexander Nikolayevich, the future tsar Alexander II, was a very selective child. The young prince was very hard to please. Alexander didn’t like fish, disclaimed vegetables, and never ate curds. Alexander’s mother Alexandra Fedorovna was very upset by her son. To get him used to healthy food, she once scared Alexander by saying that if he didn’t eat curds, he would never grow up. But her threats didn’t have any effect. Then Alexandra Fedorovna asked the court confectioner to make a healthy curd dessert. That was how the delicious, tender and slightly sweet curd cheesecake was invented.
